Regular Wellness Exams

Bringing your cat or dog to us on a regular basis serves several purposes. It allows us to form a deeper relationship with you and your pet, monitor your pet’s ever-changing health for signs of disease, and it gives us the opportunity to run screening tests and administer routine vaccinations. A regular wellness exam for your pet will include:

  • A nose-to-tail physical exam
  • Fecal exam to check for intestinal parasites
  • Disease screening tests as appropriate
  • Vaccinations, when due for boosters
  • Nutrition and weight management if needed
  • Heartworm test every 6 months for dogs

For exotic pets, wellness services are similar, but also include an in-depth discussion of their home habitat and diet to determine whether any malady is the result of improper husbandry.

Learn More About Heartworms

Heartworm and Parasite Prevention

Parasites are a serious concern for pets, not only because they are a nuisance, but because they can severely impact your pet’s health. Many parasites also carry dangerous diseases that they can transfer to your pet with harmful consequences. Mosquitoes carry heartworms and are particularly prominent in our area. Heartworms pose a serious risk to dogs, cats, and ferrets too. With regular parasite preventatives, however, heartworms and other parasites such as fleas, ticks, roundworms, and hookworms can be kept at bay.

Common Concerns in Our Area

Beyond heartworms, allergies are another common problem in our area. Pets can develop allergies just like us, and their allergens are similar too. Yet, they often suffer from dermatological symptoms, rather than respiratory problems. Many of our patients present with issues like excessive scratching, biting, and licking at their itchy skin. Managing these symptoms is essential to your pet's wellness. Learn more about pet allergies on our dermatology page.
